Information Update 21 06 09

Information from Southend on Sea - the EWA has been advised by the Parks Department that to date they have had 25, one metre square rubber safety tiles stolen from children's playgrounds. These are probably being stolen for use in private gardens around children's swings, climbing frames etc. and are possibly being disposed of through boot fairs etc

If this type of theft has not reached Essex yet, it will probably be a matter of time.

Please let the police know if any of these tiles are stolen or if you see any for sale.

Information from Trading Standards – there is a firm called RoofRite Roofing offering maintenance services around the Maldon area. There is no problem with the work done, but the charges are considered to be unnecessarily high. If anyone is approached they would be advised not to agree to any work without getting a minimum of 3 quotes. If in any doubt, contact Paul Hardy at Trading Standards on 07920 467027.

For the attention of all farms and smallholdings etc – in mid-June a large quantity of tractor weights were seized following an arrest. Some of the weights were identified as stolen from Waldegraves Farm, Widdington. The remainder of weights re yet to be claimed or reported as stolen.
Please check to make sure that you have not had any tractor weights stolen – likely dates are between 5 and 8 June 2009. If you are missing any, please contact me as soon as possible.

Attached to this update is a picture of a vehicle seen on farm land without permission, believed to be connected to hare coursing. Could members of FarmWatch in particular, keep their eyes open and let us know if you see this vehicle on your land.

DISTRACTION BURGLARY – please treat as urgent!
At around 1330 on 18 May a male knocked at the door of a property in Maldon Road, Goldhanger. He said to the occupier “ I have been ringing your doorbell for ages. I am from the water board, can you turn your water off and drain it – I’ll do it for you”. The male insisted on trying to get into the property.

Any information to Maldon Police Station.

FRAUDULENT PHONE CALLS! – Please tell everyone, especially any vulnerable or elderly people
Some elderly people within the Central Division district have received calls from people saying they are “Police Officers”. They say they are working on behalf of a “fraud department” within either Essex or the Metropolitan Police and are trying to prevent card fraud.

They ask for victims details and say that someone will call to collect cards and PIN numbers. The call is from a withheld number, so cannot be traced.

Description of the man supposed to be behind these calls:
Black male, about 30-35 years, 6ft tall and of medium build.

Please make sure that everyone is clear they should under no circumstances, divulge any information over the phone, especially not details of addresses or bank details. Anyone who does receive a call like this should call the Police on 0300 333 4444 straight away. If anyone finds someone at their door asking for cards or PIN numbers, do not let them in, but call 999 immediately.

IF IT LOOKS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS!
A member of the public has brought to our attention a letter received from Euromillion, Lottery International, purportedly sent from Oxford Street East, London, but posted in Watford. The letter informs the recipient they have won a large sum of money, in this case £585,000. In order to claim the “winnings” you are asked to provide personal information, including bank details.

Do not reply to this, or any other letter asking for personal information. Throw it away – it is just junk mail! Please make sure this message is passed on.
